Foam Basics
Polyurethane foam is a combination of the following major
petroleum based products:
POLYOL
- which
gives the product its resilience or bounce, and

TDI
(toluene
dioscyanate) - which provides the compression.
Additives are also used in the production of polyurethane
foam.
These additives supplement the
primary blowing agents (water or CO2, depending on the density), and are used
to adjust polyurethane foam softness and texture.
When mixed together with other specific ingredients, these byproducts and additives produce the reaction that causes flexible polyurethane foam to form.
The two main pouring methods for foam are: The Open Trough Conveyer and The Variable Pressure Foaming.
Open Trough Conveyer Method
The Open Trough Conveyer method of pouring foam takes place
in a trough type looking machine.
The
additives and byproducts are sent down a conveyer belt into an open trough
where atmospheric pressure, humidity, and temperature changes can affect bubble
formation.
The additives cause the foam
to expand (like yeast in bread) and the trough gradually fills out into a
finished “bun” of foam.
Variable Pressure Foaming Method
The Variable pressure foaming (“VPFSM”) method
uses the same machinery and conveyer system that is used in the Open Trough
Conveyer method above; however, the machinery is placed in a completely
enclosed production environment which contains a series of sealed,
pressure-controlled chambers.
The VPF method produces a high quality foam product that is
better for the environment as the method does not use any solvents or any other
potentially harmful blowing agents. As well, VPF uses fewer chemicals, opting
instead to use mechanical and environmental controls to alter the foam
characteristics during production. The machinery used in the VPF method
provides a Zero emissions rating, earning this method of pouring foam the
California EPA award.
VPF creates a new standard of high-performance foam
production, which
has
been
patented and coined as Chamber TechnologySM.
